A damaged box does not automatically mean its contents are defective. Equally, it does not establish that the packaging is the only affected part. Work from the outside inward and record the condition before tape, padding and loose components lose their original arrangement during unpacking.
Record the external evidence
Photograph the whole carton and take close views of unusual areas. A crushed corner, a hole through the wall and a damp patch are different observations. Note whether a mark reaches the internal cushioning and whether the package appears to have been conspicuously retaped.
Open it carefully along a suitable edge. A knife inserted too deeply can damage the contents during unpacking. Keep the packaging initially and put loose parts somewhere they remain clearly associated with the product. Conceal shipping labels before sharing photographs publicly, because they can contain addresses and other information irrelevant to the damage.
Assess the protection inside
Check whether the product is held in place and delicate surfaces are separated from the outer carton. A power supply free to strike a screen is different from separately cushioned accessories. Broken shaped supports or severely compressed padding can indicate stress without establishing exactly what caused it or when it happened.
Do not switch on electrical equipment when its packaging is wet or liquid is visible on the item. Cracks, exposed wiring and a distorted enclosure also need clarification before functional testing. Dry outer cardboard alone cannot reliably rule out earlier moisture or an effect hidden deeper inside the package.
Report the specific discrepancy
Compare the contents with the description supplied before purchase. If the listing mentioned only a damaged retail carton, additional marks on the device are a separate finding. Describe their position, size and possible effect without presenting an unverified technical diagnosis as fact.
Send the relevant seller or shipping contact an organised selection of overview and detail photographs. Ask how to proceed and follow the instructions applicable to the shipment. Dismantling a product to investigate independently may change the very condition that initially needed to be recorded, making subsequent discussion less straightforward.
Common questions
Should I throw away a crushed carton immediately?
Keep it with its padding initially. It may help explain the relationship between packaging damage and the discrepancy you report.
Can an intact box rule out damage?
No. Internal restraint, previous handling and product condition remain separate checks. Good-looking cardboard is not evidence that the product functions correctly.
