A height-adjustable desk is more than an attractive top. Frame, motors, control box and handset must work together. Ask about the exact combination and previous modifications when buying used. A replacement power supply or a wider aftermarket top should be described explicitly. Identify the components before assuming that a complete-looking desk is a matching system.
Observe stability at different heights
Start low, checking visible joints and support on a level floor. Look for missing bolts, damaged feet and pulled-out top fixings. Movement can have different causes; vigorous shaking is not a standardised load test. Describe where the movement occurs.
Standing position matters too. A desk may feel steady when low but become distracting during ordinary typing when raised. Try only normal handling within its intended use. Permitted load and top size come from its documentation, not a brief experiment with body weight.
Keep the travel area clear
Have the desk move through its intended height range as instructed. Keep children, cables and objects clear of its path. Observe whether both sides move together, the top becomes uneven or unusual stops occur. A lost stored position differs from a column sticking on one side.
IKEA’s electric-desk guidance includes obstructions, overload and model-specific resetting among troubleshooting considerations. A reset is therefore not universal proof of repair. Resolve recurring problems before buying. Never test protective functions using a hand or body as an obstruction.
Identify the complete electrical system
Compare markings on drives, controller and supply. Inspect visible wiring for crushing and intended secure connections without opening housings. Brackets, cable tray and desktop may be separate accessories. Agree exactly what the offer includes.
Plan transport and reassembly. A powered frame may need partial dismantling for collection, requiring the correct instructions and all parts secured. Measure the seated and standing ranges you need. An impressive maximum height offers little benefit if the lowest position is already too high for your workstation.
Common questions
Does a successful reset prove the drive is sound?
It confirms only the observed behaviour afterwards. Recurring faults, uneven movement or unusual noise need further explanation.
Can I fit any oversized top?
Only within the intended dimensions and load. Fixing, balance and travel clearance must suit the frame specification.
