A freshly vacuumed rug may look tidy while its underside or edges show substantial damage. Arrange a viewing with access to those areas. Ask about material, care label and storage. A colour name or a claim of premium quality does not tell you how the rug may be cleaned. Establish that before assuming any stain will easily disappear.
Examine pile and backing separately
View the pile in ordinary light from different directions. Traffic marks and shading may change with the nap. Look for missing fibres, pulled loops and noticeably thinned patches. Compare several areas instead of judging only the corner shown in the listing.
Have an accessible edge gently lifted to inspect backing and binding. Tears, separating backing and apparent moisture marks are separate findings. Handling a large rug should not create a lifting or tripping problem. Request further photographs where a safe full view is not possible at the viewing.
Plan cleaning for the material
IKEA describes different care by rug type and refers to the particular material instructions. A small washable cotton mat is therefore no template for a large wool or composite rug. The backing may also limit procedures. A carpet-cleaning machine is not automatically suitable for every used rug.
Ask what caused stains and which products were already applied. Rubbing or experimental treatment without permission can alter condition. If professional cleaning would be needed, request advice using material details and photographs. Include collection, drying and the possibility of residual marks in the cost.
Consider the intended room
Measure the floor area, door clearance and potential trip edges. A curled edge may matter more in a walkway than beneath furniture. A suitable underlay must work with both rug and floor; tape from the previous home does not establish appropriate permanent fixing.
Treat musty or strongly masked smells as reasons for questions, not definitive diagnoses. Resolve damp-storage history and your cleaning requirements before buying. The price should remain acceptable if a visible wear mark does not disappear fully after appropriate care.
Common questions
Are all natural-fibre rugs washable?
No. Fibre, dye, construction and backing need consideration together. Follow the particular care instructions.
Does cleaning guarantee no odour?
Not permanently or for every person’s perception. Inspect the rug dry where possible and ask about the procedure and subsequent storage.
