A washing machine cannot be handled like an empty cupboard. Moving internal parts, residual water and vulnerable connections all affect preparation. Before arranging collection, establish who will disconnect the appliance and whether the correct transit restraints are available. A bargain becomes awkward if these questions are left until the machine is on the stairs.

Use restraints intended for the machine

Transit restraints are not interchangeable screws from a toolbox. Their shape, spacers and fixing positions must suit the appliance. Compare the parts present with the manufacturer’s transport instructions. Have missing items identified from the full model number before booking a vehicle.

Bosch washing-machine manuals describe refitting restraints for another move. Do not transfer that procedure to a different design without checking its instructions. Ask the seller whether previous journeys used the required restraints. An unanswered question leaves the handling history uncertain; it does not itself prove damage.

Plan for water and the collection route

Water can remain inside the machine and hoses after a wash programme has finished. Follow the model instructions for draining and disconnecting it. Have suitable containers ready and ask a competent person to deal with connections you do not understand. Water and electrical connections need careful preparation.

Measure doors, corners, stair landings and the vehicle opening. Cabinet dimensions alone do not allow for carrying positions or handling equipment. Arrange enough help or an appropriate moving service. The door, detergent drawer and control panel should not become improvised carrying handles.

Treat arrival as a new installation

Secure hoses and cables so that they cannot drag or become trapped. The appliance must be restrained against movement in the vehicle; choose appropriate equipment and a transport position consistent with its instructions and the moving plan. Taking a loading photograph does not provide physical restraint.

At the destination, place the machine on a suitable stable surface. Remove and store the transit restraints as directed before operation, then level and connect the appliance correctly. Photograph any new cabinet marks before the first cycle so that its condition before and after the journey can be compared.

Common questions

Can I move it without the original bolts?

First establish which approved restraint parts the model needs. Similar-looking bolts are not a reliable substitute. A moving service can help plan suitable preparation.

Why keep the restraints afterwards?

They may be required for a future move. Label the set with the model number and store its spacers and covers together.
