A B-grade induction hob may be discounted because of packaging marks. If its glass is affected, that description is insufficient. Request clear views of the surface, edges and model identifier. Before purchasing, establish whether the worktop cutout, supply and surrounding installation are actually intended for this appliance. Similar width alone cannot answer these questions.
Do not combine scratches and cracks
Examine the glass in good light from different angles. Mark the relevant area in photographs. Surface rubbing is not equivalent to a crack, but an unclear line in a blurred image cannot safely be declared harmless either.
Bosch induction instructions warn against operating an appliance with cracked glass. Suspected damage is therefore not a reason to try heating it to see whether it still works. Have the area assessed before use. Tape or polishing cannot replace an assessment of a damaged surface.
Identify the exact fitting dimensions
Visible appliance width says little about the required cutout. Compare the installation drawing with the worktop, edge clearances and material thickness. Include the space below and intended ventilation paths. A drawer or oven beneath the hob may introduce further requirements.
Ask whether the mounting components and intended seal are included. Previously cut or adapted parts should be described. Missing installation drawings are not a reason to guess dimensions. Obtain the documents using the complete model number and give them to the intended installer.
Resolve electrical installation before buying
Supply, connection type and competent installation must suit the particular version and location. Have an appropriately qualified person assess this. An included loose cable or successful demonstration at another property does not establish suitability for your kitchen.
An undamaged, correctly installed hob can be demonstrated through normal controls with suitable cookware. Observe pan detection and control of the intended zones. Failure to detect a pan may relate to cookware, but improvised wiring trials or opening the underside still have no place in a purchase inspection. Include removal, transport and fitting in the overall cost.
Common questions
Can a hob still operate with cracked glass?
It may still respond, but that does not establish safe use. Follow the manufacturer’s warning and have the damage assessed.
Will an equally wide hob fit the old cutout?
Not necessarily. Cutout, clearances, depth and fitting method can differ. Use the replacement model’s installation drawing.
