An electric kettle looks uncomplicated, but hot water and electrical contacts deserve attention when buying used. Inspect the interior while the appliance is cold and unplugged. Ask for the exact model and its matching base; a similar-looking underside or connector is not enough to establish the right pairing. Start with condition before considering a powered demonstration.
Separate scale from material damage
Pale deposits may be limescale. Cracks, peeling surfaces and a distorted bottom are different findings and should not disappear under a general promise of cleaning. Look at the spout, level window and handle attachment. Unidentified marks cannot be reliably diagnosed from a photograph.
Check that any intended scale filter is present and sits securely. Follow model instructions for cleaning and descaling. Philips distinguishes interior care from the electrical base in its manual. Neither the appliance nor its base should simply be immersed for cleaning.
Check lid and handle without hot water
Open and close the cold lid using its intended mechanism. It should latch without pushing its edge into position. Look for visible cracks at the hinge, release button and handle mounting. A loose handle matters more to the buying decision than a scratch on the exterior.
Inspect the standing surface and whether the kettle sits correctly on its base. The cable, plug and accessible contact areas should have no obvious damage or burn marks. Stop if these are present and obtain qualified assessment rather than repeating the trial with water.
Observe an ordinary boiling cycle
Use the correctly assigned base and a suitable quantity of water within the markings for a supervised trial. Observe the intended controls, normal switch-off behaviour and visible leakage. Place it on a stable dry surface and keep clear of steam.
Deliberately switching it on empty to test boil-dry protection is unnecessary. Do not manipulate the lid while water boils either. Record findings precisely: water at a cabinet joint differs from condensation at the intended spout. One normal cycle is not an electrical safety inspection.
Common questions
Will another base with the same connector work?
Appearance does not establish compatibility. Use the intended base and confirm its assignment before operation.
Can descaling make every interior usable again?
No. It removes suitable deposits but cannot fix cracked material, leaking joints or damaged electrical components.
